Regional Climate Resilience Program 2 – Malawi

The Regional Climate Resilience Program (RCRP-2) strengthens Malawi’s long-term resilience through five components: Risk Management and Climate Financing to build institutional capacity and integrate climate financing; Infrastructure Investments and Sustainable Asset Management to support post-cyclone recovery and resilient catchment infrastructure.

Adaptive Climate Services for Resilient Communities to enhance preparedness and embed climate in social protection; Project Management to ensure effective coordination across ministries and districts; and the Contingent Emergency Response Component (CERC) enabling rapid crisis response.

Zomba City Council is implementing an Urban Public Works Programme (UPWP), which is focusing on climate-resilient interventions involving 4,000 households. The first 30 days’ phase mainly covered drainage management and road reshaping works, spanning 42,517.02 metres of roads and drains. The works have improved the usability and accessibility of roads and access routes damaged by the cyclones in the six targeted wards. Implementation of the works was preceded by key preparatory activities, including stakeholder engagement, hotspot mapping, ward action planning, participant identification and validation, as well as training of extension workers and foremen. Overall, the first phase achieved its intended objective of improving critical infrastructure and strengthening community resilience. Read More

The Blantyre City Council is in the process of rehabilitating the Mthawira Parkway, a stretch of road running from Chileka Road Junction at Chirimba to Machinjiri Area 12. Some of the major activities are: bridge construction, culvert construction, drainage works and pavement construction. The works will take 18 months, with project design where consultants are developing designs, preparing the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) reports for the project underway. The road covers a total length of 8.4 km. Read More

District helping Malawi and the African Union strengthen resilience to floods, droughts, and cyclones. The program rehabilitates critical infrastructure impacted by Tropical Cyclone Freddy, invests in sustainable catchment management in the Shire River Basin, and builds community‑level capacity to respond to climate shocks. Through the Roads Authority PIU, RCRP‑2 is rehabilitating and reconstructing transport assets damaged by Cyclone Freddy. Works include climate‑resilient bridges, culverts, and road sections across southern Malawi districts, grouped into three lots: small‑scale structures, medium‑scale bridges and culverts, and nine bridges along the Chingo‑Makanjira Road in Mangochi. These interventions restore access to markets, schools, and healthcare, strengthening resilience and connectivity.. Read More

RCRP‑2 is rehabilitating the Lichenya, Mfundazi, and Chididi water supply schemes to improve climate resilience and reliable access to safe water. Works include upgrading tanks, pipelines, filtration systems, and communal water points, alongside strengthening Water Users Associations. These investments will benefit about 134,000 people across the three schemes, ensuring sustainable operation and maintenance. Read More
